Cain and Abel

4 Adam^[a] made love to his wife^(A) Eve,^(B) and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain.^[b](C) She said, “With the help of the Lord I have brought forth^[c] a man.”

²⁵ Adam made love to his wife^(A) again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth,^[a](B) saying, “God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.”^(C)

¹⁶ I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her.^(A) I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations;^(B) kings of peoples will come from her.”

²⁰ And as for Ishmael, I have heard you: I will surely bless him; I will make him fruitful and will greatly increase his numbers.^(A) He will be the father of twelve rulers,^(B) and I will make him into a great nation.^(C)

³ May God Almighty^[a](A) bless^(B) you and make you fruitful^(C) and increase your numbers^(D) until you become a community of peoples.

³² Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son.^(A) She named him Reuben,^[a](B) for she said, “It is because the Lord has seen my misery.^(C) Surely my husband will love me now.”

³³ She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “Because the Lord heard that I am not loved,^(D) he gave me this one too.” So she named him Simeon.^[b](E)

³⁴ Again she conceived, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “Now at last my husband will become attached to me,^(F) because I have borne him three sons.” So he was named Levi.^[c](G)

³⁵ She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “This time I will praise the Lord.” So she named him Judah.^[d](H) Then she stopped having children.^(I)

² Jacob became angry with her and said, “Am I in the place of God,^(A) who has kept you from having children?”^(B)

⁶ Then Rachel said, “God has vindicated me;^(A) he has listened to my plea and given me a son.”^(B) Because of this she named him Dan.^[a](C)

¹⁷ God listened to Leah,^(A) and she became pregnant and bore Jacob a fifth son. ¹⁸ Then Leah said, “God has rewarded me for giving my servant to my husband.”^(B) So she named him Issachar.^[a](C)

¹⁹ Leah conceived again and bore Jacob a sixth son. ²⁰ Then Leah said, “God has presented me with a precious gift. This time my husband will treat me with honor,^(D) because I have borne him six sons.” So she named him Zebulun.^[b](E)
